Static buzz

I liked the Images on the pages; they draw you in and are very colourful. The masthead stands out because it is white; it stands against the dark background. There is a lot of information on the double page spread and there are pull lines and page numbers.
The text is bold and all white, it doesn’t fit with the theme properly and looks unprofessional. The text on the front page in the red box doesn’t fit in very well, it is the wrong colour scheme and the font looks unprofessional. The pull lines on the front cover also don’t fit in well and the font used in the masthead doesn’t look good because it looks blurry and doesn’t stand out.
Rock n roll

The composition of the contents page and double page spread is really good as it is well laid out. The colour scheme is really good and the colours fit the genre of the magazine. The contents age has titles, which are grey, and text, which is black. The font is really good, it is easy to read and looks professional, and it looks like an actual magazines font.
The image on the front cover isn’t well edited and looks like it has just been plonked in the middle of the page without thinking of composition, the edges of the image are all choppy and it looks like they haven’t took care with the editing. The text on the front cover is in a bad font and doesn’t feel like it fits with the magazine in general.
Broadsword

The image on the front cover is good quality. The text of the masthead looks good, the font and colours are fitting.
The font for all of the pull lines and most of the text throughout the magazine is really bad. The images are distorted and overall the magazine looks really unprofessional.

What I have learned from looking at student work :
After looking at students work I have learnt to make sure the editing and quality of the images are good and clear. I would use better fonts that look professional and I would use a fixed colour scheme instead of one, which is all over the place and looks messy. I have learnt the composition is key to having a good magazine, If the text boxes are all over the place then the magazine looks unprofessional and also quite cheap.

I will use this new knowledge to help me make my magazine look better than the other ones by taking into account strengths and weaknesses. I will make sure my colour scheme fits the genre and I will make the composition look smart, I will make the images clear and I will have the correct fonts for the magazine.

How I will use this new knowledge to help me create my own product :

double page spread

Photoshop skills development 2- Simpsons poster

i have made this poster on photoshop, i used layers and text to create the effect, i used the magic want tool to select the background of the title and delete it, i then tidied it up with the eraser. i used the eraser to make a faded effect on the image at the bottom, i think this effect looks good as it blends in with the rest of the poster.

Photoshop skills development 1- Jarvis Cocker

I have edited this image of Jarvis Cocker for the main  page of a magazine, i have used many tools and effects to get this final look shown below. First, I selected the outline of Jarvis with the magnetic lasso tool, i used this because it is accurate and fast, i then pressed cmd+J to duplicate the selected area, this means i can now put images in-between the layers and get the effect of the masthead being behind his head. i used the text tool and font size 18 to get the effect for the title, i wanted to make it look formal and professional so used the font Palatino Linotype, it looks really good and i think i will use it again for my final front cover. For the background, i filled it in with the paint bucket tool and then used a darker shade of purple and a special brush at a large size, this gave the hazy pattern in the background. The coloured jacket was easy to make, I made a new layer and then painted over the jacket with the paint brush, then used the overlay tool to make it blend with the clothing. i did the same with the  shirt, but green. I inserted the images by copy and pasting them in, and removed the backgrounds from them by using the magic want tool, then deleting it.

inspirational videos

i like this music video because it is different from all the others, i could use the cartoon effect in my magazine.

i like this music video because it is different in the sense that it is old and brings back memories, i could use this theme in my magazine.

i think this video could influence my magazine because it is a British theme and that is rarely used in media.

i liked the black and white theme of the video and i could use this in my magazine.

These videos are all of the same genre and will be based in my music magazine

Magazine Contents

Masthead
The mast-head is in bold capital letters positioned at the top of the page, it is white and contrasts with the background colour of black. It catches the eye as it is large and informs the reader what the page is about.
Necessary information
The date is underneath the masthead 15th august 2009 in a smaller font size and it is not bold. there is no issue number because this will be on the front cover. There is information about what is inside the magazine as it is a contents page, and i cant see a page number, suggesting it is an earlier page in the magazine which doesn't need a page.
Text
The text is in bold some places and normal others, it has a basic and consistent font. It has information about what is in the magazine, it also has adverts and eye catching sub headings. The headings stand out most as they are bold capital letters inside a black box, and the text touches the edges and because it is white it looks like the text has been cut out of the box.
Images
The main image is of a man playing the guitar; it is in the centre of the page and catches the eye, this is because it is lively and colourful, it attracts fans of the Arctic Monkeys and other fans of he rock genre as he is playing guitar and dresses in a rock style.
Composition
The composition is that the text is wrapped around the outside of the image, this makes it easier to read as it is in columns and not all over the place. The composition is partly how this contents page works so well, it is a simple lay out with text under the main image about the big article, it also makes the text easier to read as it isn't all compacted together.
Colour
The colour matches a colour scheme of black white and red, this makes the red stand out and catches the eye. Because it follows a colour scheme and isn't different colours every single page it makes the magazine look better and higher quality.

Masthead

The masthead is bold and states this is the contents page,  it fits into the theme colours of the magazine and stands out. It is inverted colours to all the headings which fits the colour scheme really well.

Necessary information

It has the date and issue number underneath the masthead, the font isnt bold and the colour is white on a black background.

Text

The text has what content is in the magazine, it is black and not bold as this is would make the headings which are yellow not stand out.

Images

The images in this contents page are eye catching and stand out from the text, they are colourful but could be brighter. The images will appeal to certain groups of people, for instance, the man with the tattoo may appeal to people who like tattoos, and people with tattoos are usually associated  with rock music or pop music, as it is popular to have tattoos.

Composition

The composition is layed out with the images near the center and text around the outsides, this makes it easier to read and the pictures more visable.

Colour

The colour scheme of this contents page is black white and yellow, it looks good because these colours compliment each other.

Masthead

The masthead is large and cut into segments, i think it looks really good and the font and colour fit in with the theme. The sliced into 3 gives and unusual look which works really well, it stands out from the rest of the text is as it is large and white, it is also all capital letters and bold.

Necessary information

The contents page has all the correct information, about p diddy and his new clothes line to draw in readers.

Text

The font and colours of the font is a modern font and it is black, it is spaced out well and looks really good, i think it could have been bigger but it might just be the image size rather than the magazines text. The headings have different fonts which stand out and draw the reader in, also the subheadings in grey also makes the main body text stand out from the subheading.

Images

There is only one image of the lady in the picture but it is large and fits really well and goes well with the colour scheme. It is placed just right composition wise to give a really good effect, the text wraps around her.

Composition

The composition is really well presented, the image fits in with the text and masthead well and the shoe going over the mast head gives a good look. This composition stands out because of the lines under each section, it fills out the page and makes it look that bit more professional.

Key features of a magazine cover

In the image below i have pointed out the key features of a magazine cover.

Mast Head
The Mast Head is the main title of the magazine, it is generally large and can be infront or behind the image. It is generally located in the top left corner.

Sell lines
These are smaller text and have interesting things to draw in the reader.

 Essential info
This is generally the issue number and the date, it can include the price also.

Main sell line
Enigma code teases the audience, generally three words, no general position and large text size. It is regarded as what the publisher thinks is most important.

Sub-head
This exaplins the main sell line enigma and further entises the audience.

Main Image
This builds an image/ identity of the magazine it also draws in the audience.

AS MEDIA BRIEF

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine
